Wheels 2 Work

Wheels 2 Work (W2W) is a moped loan scheme aimed at helping (mainly young) people get over the initial problem of getting to work or training where no suitable alternative transport is available.

Successful candidates who are referred by agencies such as Employment Services and Connexions receive a moped for six months after completing their free Compulsory Basic Training (CBT).

Safety helmets and protective clothing are also supplied and insurance, tax and servicing are covered. During the six-month loan period candidates are encouraged by the co-ordinator to save up for their own transport or make other arrangements.

RYECAT is part of the North Yorkshire wide network of W2W projects. RYECAT operate two projects: Ryedale and Scarborough W2W and the Selby District W2W.

Northallerton and District Voluntary Services Association (NDVSA) operate W2W in Hambleton and Richmondshire and are developing a second project covering the Harrogate and Craven Districts.

RYECAT and NDVSA  work closely together to provide a coordinated approach to delivery of Wheels 2 Work across North Yorkshire.

Wheels 2 Work: Ryedale and Scarborough

Ryedale and the Borough of Scarborough Wheels to Work scheme commenced in August 2002, copying similar highly successful schemes elsewhere in the country.

The project now operates 28 mopeds available to predominantly 16 to 25 year olds unable to find adequate transport to work, training or full-time education.

The mopeds are taxed and insured, all safety and wet weather clothing is provided, and Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is provided free of charge. The moped can only be loaned out upon successful completion of CBT.

W2W moped users currently pay £5.00 per week as a contribution to the running costs of the scheme.

Wheels 2 Work: Selby District
The inclusion of the Selby District Wheels to Work project into the very successful Ryedale and Scarborough Borough scheme provides an opportunity to unify the wheels to work projects across the county, providing economies of scale and coordinating funding applications.

Selby W2W operates 20 mopeds on the same lines as the Ryedale and Scarborough W2W project. There is a local coordinator providing support and assistance for those people living within the district who experience difficulty in getting to work, training or further education.
