Volunteer
Little Red Bus is always in need of new car and minibus volunteer drivers and escorts. We also provide all necessary training. To become a volunteer you must be between 26 and 70 years old. Why not join our car volunteers?
What is the scheme all about? The scheme provides support to people without any form of transport. Many individuals in the community are unable to use public transport, even when it is available, as services are either insufficient to meet their needs, or often inappropriate. Without our volunteer drivers, many people would find themselves house-bound. Those with physical or learning difficulties would be left without any means of independence.
Who do we help?
We are currently helping hundreds of customers on a regular basis, in addition to numerous 'one-off' requests. Passengers range from the young to the elderly. Most referrals come from a variety of sources, such as voluntary organisations, clinics and relatives.
The car scheme relies on volunteer drivers. Without them many people would be unable to visit relatives or keep essential appointments at day care centres, social and leisure clubs, dentists, doctors, hospitals etc.
How far might I have to go?
The majority of journeys are local, in and around Harrogate, but transport is also needed to Leeds, York and to holiday destinations such as Scarborough, Whitby and further afield.
How much time would I have to give?
You give as much or as little time as you are able (daytimes, evenings or weekends) and can undertake single or regular requests as you wish. Journeys are allocated where possible for the week ahead, but some requests come in at short notice. You are always free to decide whether or not to take on any request and should not hesitate to say no.
